A community member has reported a defensive black bear at the panning reserve downstream from the Thompson River where it meets the Fraser.

At this time of year, bears are entering a phase of hyperphagia, an increased period of feeding to fatten up before hibernation.

TIPS FOR STAYING BEAR AWARE

At home:
– Pick fruit from trees.
– Secure garbage, recycling, and compost.
– Remove bear attractants (like bird feeders) and clean your BBQ

– Don’t leave food in your car.

On trails:
– Carry bear spray and practice using it.
– Keep dogs on leash to avoid conflict.

– Make noise and give bears lots of space.

Report human-wildlife conflict to the BC Conservation Officer Service: 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).
